History of the Colosseum Underground

Availing a Colosseum Underground tour is a great way to learn about the rich history of this area. The construction of the Colosseum began between AD 70 to AD 72, under the rule of Emperor Vespasian. The construction was completed in AD 80. However, it is important to note that the Underground, also known as the Hypogeum, was not part of the original structure of the Colosseum, and was later added to it by Emperor Domitian.

It took almost 10 years after the inauguration of the arena, to complete the construction of the Underground of the Colosseum. Upon its completion, the Colosseum Underground featured a system of tunnels, along with two major corridors. This is the very space that was used to hold animals, and gladiators, which were used to wait before their fights. The Underground also featured 80 vertical shafts. The Underground was reconstructed at least 12 times throughout history, and included numerous elevators and hydraulic mechanisms as well.
