The construction was completed in AD 80. It took almost 10 years after the inauguration of the arena, to complete the construction of the Underground of the Colosseum. Upon its completion, the Colosseum Underground featured a system of tunnels, along with two major corridors. This is the very space that was used to hold animals, and gladiators, which were used to wait before their fights. The Underground also featured 80 vertical shafts. The Underground was reconstructed at least 12 times throughout history, and included numerous elevators and hydraulic mechanisms as well.
